In a landmark case with far-reaching implications, South Africa has formally accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians, urging the United Nations' top court to intervene and halt Israeli military operations in Gaza. Israel, founded in the aftermath of the Holocaust, vehemently denies the allegations, engaging with the court to defend its international reputation, a rare move for the country.

The International Court of Justice, during opening statements, heard South African lawyers argue that the latest Gaza war is part of a long history of Israeli oppression against Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the case, vowing to continue the fight against Hamas, the militant group accused of launching a deadly attack on Israeli communities.

This case is one of the most significant in international court history, addressing the core of the Israel-Palestine conflict. South Africa seeks preliminary orders to compel Israel to stop its military campaign in Gaza, where over 23,000 people have died, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

While Israel insists on following international law and minimizing harm to civilians, South Africa claims a

"plausible claim of genocidal acts."

The court's decision on South Africa's request for "provisional measures" could take weeks, with the full case expected to extend over years.

The case challenges the identity of Israel as a Jewish state and touches on South Africa's comparison of Israeli policies to its own history under apartheid. Protests surround the court, with pro-Israeli demonstrators calling for the release of hostages held by Hamas, while pro-Palestinian protesters demand an end to Israeli apartheid.

The courtroom echoes with arguments on both sides, with Israel countering accusations of genocide. The case raises questions about the court's findings being considered binding and potential U.N. sanctions if Israel does not comply.

As the two-day hearing continues, it remains to be seen how this legal battle will shape the narrative around Israel's actions in Gaza and the broader Israel-Palestine conflict. The international community watches closely as South Africa challenges Israel on a scale rarely seen in the realm of international justice.
